I suggest that everyone, but artists especially, keep a dream diary. Basically, every morning when you wake up, you write down whatever it is you remember from your dreams, along with your thoughts on them. Apparently, once your subconscious realizes that you are recording it, you can sort of communicate with it.
I've been keeping one for three nights, now, and it's already paying off. Last night, in my sleep, I pretty much finished one of the three worlds I'm working on, along with some important inhabitants and protagonists in a story, the story itself, a map, and much more. All I did in the morning was write it down.
Definitely well worth the half-hour effort every morning.
